Apple Turnover ... in Your Grave
Possibly the easiest themed treat I've ever made. It's like making a normal turnover with one extra step and the result is wonderfully spooky. If you are looking for a simple way to impress your friends or coworkers this October, this is it.

Apple Turnover... in Your Grave
Makes 12 turnovers
Ingredients:
- 4 sweet apples (honeycrisp, rave, macintosh, or pink lady)
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons cold water
- 2 packages puff pastry (vegans should check the ingredients as many brands use butter)
Directions:
- Peel and dice your apples. You should have about 4 cups.
- In a large pan over medium heat, melt the coconut oil and add the spices.
- Once you can smell the spices, add all of the sugars and stir them in.
- Add the apples and stir to coat them with the liquid.
- Cook for 10 minutes or until the apples are fork tender.
- Mix the cornstarch and the cold water to make a slurry and pour it over the apples. Stir until the mixture thickens and the liquid coats the apples.
- Set aside to cool.
- Shape:
- Thaw the puff pastry and cut each sheet into 3 pieces.
- Take 1 segment and put 1 heaping tablespoon of filling on 1/2 leaving at least 1/2 inch margin around the edge.
- Dab the edges around the entire segment with water and fold over the empty side to cover the filling.
- Press the edges down and shape it into a coffin shape.
- Now go around the edges with a fork and press the edges together again to prevent leakage during baking.
- Using a knife, cut the corners and edges so that they better resemble a coffin as well.
- Finally, carve a cross into the top of the turnover.
- Bake at 400ºF for 15 minutes or until they are nice and golden brown.
- Let cool slightly and enjoy! They are amazing with ice cream and if you have leftover filling I highly recommend heating it and putting it on a scoop of vanilla.
