Apple Turnover ... in Your Grave

Possibly the easiest themed treat I've ever made. It's like making a normal turnover with one extra step and the result is wonderfully spooky. If you are looking for a simple way to impress your friends or coworkers this October, this is it.

Apple Turnover... in Your Grave

Makes 12 turnovers

Ingredients:

  • 4 sweet apples (honeycrisp, rave, macintosh, or pink lady)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • 2 packages puff pastry (vegans should check the ingredients as many brands use butter)

Directions:

  1. Peel and dice your apples. You should have about 4 cups.
  2. In a large pan over medium heat, melt the coconut oil and add the spices.
  3. Once you can smell the spices, add all of the sugars and stir them in.
  4. Add the apples and stir to coat them with the liquid.
  5. Cook for 10 minutes or until the apples are fork tender.
  6. Mix the cornstarch and the cold water to make a slurry and pour it over the apples. Stir until the mixture thickens and the liquid coats the apples.
  7. Set aside to cool.
  8. Shape:
    1. Thaw the puff pastry and cut each sheet into 3 pieces.
    2. Take 1 segment and put 1 heaping tablespoon of filling on 1/2 leaving at least 1/2 inch margin around the edge.
    3. Dab the edges around the entire segment with water and fold over the empty side to cover the filling.
    4. Press the edges down and shape it into a coffin shape.
    5. Now go around the edges with a fork and press the edges together again to prevent leakage during baking.
    6. Using a knife, cut the corners and edges so that they better resemble a coffin as well.
    7. Finally, carve a cross into the top of the turnover.
  9. Bake at 400ºF for 15 minutes or until they are nice and golden brown.
  10. Let cool slightly and enjoy! They are amazing with ice cream and if you have leftover filling I highly recommend heating it and putting it on a scoop of vanilla.
